I am starting a series on some of the less common species or species completely overlooked when we generally think of wildlife conservation. Many of these interesting animals are overlooked, misunderstood, bizarre, or unknown by most people. For the first of this series I have found and provided a link to ARKive’s data page on it, the Sulawesi babirusa.

Big Boy the Lion

The beautiful old lion from the link at the bottom of this posting is not doing well. He was rescued several years ago by a rehabilitation facility in South Africa. Their original hope was to rehabilitate him for release back into one of the national parks. Unfortunately it was not possible to release him back into the wild, at least not in a fashion that provided him an adequate chance of survival. Thus he has stayed on at the facility as a beloved member of their family. Currently he is not doing well and there are fears that he may not make it. He has been a part of the Moholoholo family for years and the staff there will be devastated. My wife and I had the great fortune to see this lion a few months ago in his full majesty. He and the Moholoholo staff will be in our prayers.
